Shalom Friends,

The calendar turns to February. And the Congregation Beth Israel social and religious calendars begin to fill up. I hope you’ll be able to participate in the programs we’re sponsoring. You’ll read about many of those events in this newsletter.

In case you miss them, they include regular Friday night services, a kids’ Shabbat service on March 4 (and May 20), the Purim carnival March 20, the Megillah reading March 23, a visit from Rabbi Orrin March 25, a Yom HaShoah commemoration service May 6 (starting at 6 p.m., right before Friday night services) and the general membership meeting May 15 at 11:30 a.m.

We also have our second Beer, Bourbon & BBQ fundraiser on the calendar for mid-June. And we’re looking at whether we’ll get good attendance for a community Passover seder April 23 (stay tuned for more information about that).

There is a lot going on. We need you to support the synagogue.

That’s why we’ve sent out a survey. It has eight questions on it. Please take time to answer the questions and return to the form to the synagogue. You can mail it to 12277 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS 39503.

You can scan it and email back to us at Or you can bring it to the synagogue the next time you stop by.

It’s important we hear from all of you. Congregation Beth Israel can only be successful if you participate in our programs. Our hope is we schedule functions you’ll enjoy, and host programs that will enrich your life.

The Super Bowl is February 7. If you read this before the big game, and you want to get your name in the annual Super Bowl squares contest, reach out to Gary Taylor via email ( and let him know how many squares you’ll buy. Each square is $25. The money goes into the general fund to cover maintenance costs and the programs we sponsor. What can you win?

1st quarter — 2% of pot (up to $50)
2nd quarter — 4% of pot (up to $100)
3rd quarter — 6% of pot (up to $150)
End of game — 8% of pot (up to $200)

Congregation Beth Israel is a special place. It is special because of you, our family members, the people who bring ruach to our Jewish community. Make it a point to be a more active member of our synagogue.

See you at the sanctuary.
